In June 1996 Mr. A. (50) was struck by a bullet to the head that shattered his facial bones leaving bullet fragments in the brain. Several
combinations of medications were tried but he still had breakthrough seizures. He became physically and verbally abusive to his family and others who
then cut off contact. Anti-depressants did not relieve depression. Because there seemed to be no other treatment for him it was decided to try EEG
neurofeedback even though there was concern about aggravating seizure activity.
Medications at the beginning of treatment in May 1999: Wellbutrin, 150 mg. bid, , Klonopin, 1 mg. prn., Xanax, 0.25 mg. bid, Celexa 20 mg. qd,
Navane, 2 mg. bid, Neurontin 1200 mg. qid. Tegretol 300 mg. qid, and Lamictal, 225 mg, bid.
His EEG map showed extreme slow wave amplitudes and variability, despite the large doses of antidepressants and anti-epileptic medication he was
taking. Weekly EEG neurofeedback treatment started in March 2000. The immediate response was less seizure activity, and there were fewer breakthrough
seizures as treatment progressed.
This treatment continued for 2 years with fewer seizures, improvement in memory and impulsiveness. He was able to reestablish good relationships with
his family because there were fewer anger outbursts even though medications were being reduced. [Mr. A’s medication list in March 2002: Celexa, 40
mg bid., Klonopin, 1mg. prn, (2 per week), Neurontin 400 mg. tid and 800 Qhs.]
